Primary Purpose
Provide leadership and oversight for the campus comprehensive school counseling program while directing assigned areas of instructional programming, student services, and campus operations. Serve as a member of the campus administrative team to promote academic achievement, positive campus culture, student well-being, and equitable access to opportunities for all students.
Qualifications
Education/Certification:
- Master’s degree from an accredited university
- Valid Texas School Counselor Certificate
- Texas Principal Certificate preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and career development
- Working knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices
- Ability to evaluate instructional effectiveness and implement improvement strategies
- Knowledge of campus operations, discipline systems, and student services
- Ability to interpret academic, behavioral, attendance, and assessment data
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to manage personnel, budgets, and compliance requirements
- Skill in crisis intervention and conflict resolution
- Ability to maintain emotional control under stress and manage multiple priorities
Special Knowledge/Skills: 504 Campus Coordinator
- Thorough knowledge of State and Federal laws pertaining to the prohibition of discrimination of individuals with disabilities.
- Knowledge and awareness of a broad range of student disabilities (physical, speech, hearing, vision, medical, learning, and or emotional).
- Knowledge in laws, policies, rules and regulations pertaining to the discipline of 504 eligible students.
- Knowledge of research related to Response to Intervention.
- Knowledge of scientifically based and developmentally appropriate instruction for children.
- Skill in working effectively as a team member to develop and implement accommodation and intervention plans.
- Skill in Windows operating system along with district standard software packages such as Google Office (Docs, Sheets, Slides) and eSped.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of privileges and sensitive information.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with administrators, general education teachers, RTI teams, other school and District staff, parents, agencies, and community members.
- Ability to organize and manage multiple complex tasks simultaneously and independently to meet deadlines.
Major Responsibilities and Duties
Comprehensive School Counseling Program (minimum 80%)
Guidance Curriculum
- Plan, organize, implement, and evaluate a structured, developmentally appropriate guidance curriculum.
- Deliver classroom lessons, small group sessions, and large group presentations addressing academic planning, post-secondary readiness, personal health and safety, and social-emotional development.
- Collaborate with teachers to integrate guidance standards into core content areas.
- Ensure equitable access to advanced coursework and post-secondary opportunities for all student populations.
Responsive Services
- Serve as a trained crisis responder and coordinate campus crisis response efforts in collaboration with district personnel and local agencies.
- Act as an impartial, non-reporting resource for student conflict resolution, including bullying concerns.
- participate in behavioral threat assessment and safe and supportive schools teams.
- Provide referrals and coordinate with community agencies when appropriate.
Individual Planning
- Assist students and families in monitoring academic progress and planning for graduation and post-secondary pathways.
- Interpret standardized testing data and assist with personal graduation plans.
- Support grade-level transitions and career exploration activities.
- Advocate for underserved and special populations to ensure equitable placement and services.
System Support
- Conduct annual counseling program audits and develop action plans aligned to campus improvement goals.
- Provide training and consultation to staff and parents regarding student development and mental health supports.
- Maintain accurate documentation and comply with legal, ethical, and professional standards.
Assistant Principal (maximum 20%)
Instructional Leadership
- Support and reinforce high expectations for instructional strategies and classroom management.
- Participate in instructional program evaluation and recommend improvements.
- Analyze student performance data to guide instructional decisions and intervention planning.
- Promote collegiality, collaboration, and shared decision-making among staff.
Student Management & Campus Culture
- Conduct parent, student, and teacher conferences regarding academic and behavioral concerns.
- Ensure consistent, equitable enforcement of campus policies.
- Oversee student supervision during non-instructional periods.
- Monitor attendance trends and coordinate intervention efforts.
School Improvement & Campus Operations
- Assist in planning and scheduling daily school activities, including master schedule development and teacher assignments.
- Oversee campus operations in the absence of the principal.
- Ensure compliance with district, state, and federal policies and regulations.
Assessment
- Plan, implement, and promote campus standardized testing program.
- Interpret tests and other appraisal results appropriately and communicate to school personnel, students, and their parents.
- Maintain the confidentiality of student assessment.
Professional Expectations
- Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and board policy. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
- Adhere to legal, ethical, and professional standards for school counselors including current professional standards of competence and practice.
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
