PRIMARY PURPOSE

Work under the immediate guidance and direction of the District Nurse (RN) and campus principal to implement the district school health program and provide direct services to meet the health and safety needs of the students and staff.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education/Certification:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Graduation from an accredited Health Training Program
  • Valid Texas Vocational Nurses License issued by the Texas Board of Nursing
  • First aid, CPR and AED certifications and CPR trainer certification
  • Hearing, vision, and spinal screener certifications (can be obtained in-district). Must maintain certification

Special Knowledge/Skills

  • Practical working knowledge of nursing procedures and techniques, preferably in the pediatric setting
  • Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills
  • Ability to use software to develop databases and do word processing
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Experience

  • Two+ years experience in community health, pediatric nursing or nursing which includes contact with school-age children, preferred

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

 

Health Services

  1. Provide for daily care of students with medical needs in the school setting utilizing health protocols and care plans established by the RN nurse program leader/supervising RN. Provide basic first aid care for minor injuries and illnesses and obtain necessary assistance in cases of serious trauma and /or illness.
  2. Accurately administer medications (as ordered by a physician) according to state law and District policy and recognize adverse reactions.
  3. Skillfully operate health-related equipment such as blood pressure monitors/cuff, otoscope, audiometer, thermometer, vision and hearing screening equipment, basic clinic equipment, etc.
  4. Perform screening procedures as required by Texas law, Texas Department of State Health Services, Texas Education Agency, and District policy.
  5. Maintain accurate, current, complete health records on each student, including individual daily documentation of student care, medications administered, treatments administered, immunization records, health history, screening results, and follow-up information.
  6. Assist the parent and RN nurse program leader/supervising RN in development of Individual Healthcare Plan (IHP).
  7. Identify health problems and refer students for further evaluation as necessary and follow up on the referrals to obtain optimum health for each student.
  8. Communicate daily with essential staff and RN nurse program leader/supervising RN any possible communicable diseases, any changes in students’ health status, and any family needs or concerns.
  9. Educate faculty/staff as needed on health-related topics as directed by the RN nurse program leader/supervising RN.
  10. Provide guidance to unlicensed assistive personnel or other school staff on health-related issues as directed by the RN nurse program leader/supervising RN.
  11. Participate in ARDS and IEP meetings as appropriate (in consultation with RN nurse program leader or supervising RN).
  12. Continually pursue educational opportunities to maintain an optimal level of performance and comply with Board of Nursing LVN license requirements and District requirements.

Safety

  1. Maintain an efficient and safe clinic including following infection control procedures as directed by the school nurse (RN). Use Universal Precautions Procedures when cleaning all body spills and providing wound care.
  2. Apply universal precautions.
  3. Serve on the district crisis team.
  4. Report potential health and safety hazards to campus principals or campus safety officers.

Clerical

  1. Prepare, compile, maintain, and file all correspondence, reports, records, and other documents required, including accurate and confidential student health records.
  2. Maintain a daily log of health office activities, including reportable accidents, communicable disease data, and referrals to school nurse (RN).
  3. Maintain clinic supply inventory and request supplies as needed.
  4. Maintain accurate written and computerized records as required.
  5. Demonstrate proficient computer skills as well as filing skills.

Compliance

  1. Demonstrate understanding of and compliance with the Nurse Practice Act and Standards of Nursing Practice.
  2. Comply with standards of care as outlined by the Board of Nursing for licensure.
  3. Comply with federal guidelines regarding confidentiality of individual student/family issues and concerns (HIPPA, FERPA).
  4. Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  5. Adhere to the Texas Department of State Health Services immunization laws, secure records on each student, update as necessary on health cards and computerized records.
  6. Demonstrate knowledge regarding reporting abuse to the appropriate agency according to state laws and District policy.
  7. Maintain confidentiality.

Other

  1. Model behavior that is ethical and responsible.
  2. Accept supervision and directions from RN nurse program leader/supervising RN and campus principal.
  3. Demonstrate a positive and helpful approach in dealing with students, parents, and staff.
  4. Demonstrate good communication skills with parents and staff through written and oral interactions.
  5. Perform other administrative and job related duties as assigned.
  6. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

  • Motion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension
  • Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds); may require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and position of students with physical disabilities; controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting nonambulatory students
  • Environment: Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases; frequent district-wide travel; occasional state-wide travel
  • Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress; ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of situations; ability to interpret data; ability to be effective in both oral and written communication
